Caring for your Lodge Cookware
Every piece of Lodge cookware has the capacity to become a family heirloom and continue to be used in the kitchen forever. While this may be true, it will only become possible with the correct care. Follow this three-step guide to keep your Lodge cast iron cookware clean and in the perfect condition to last.
Step one: Wash your Lodge cast iron cookware by hand using a brush of your choice. Your cast iron cookware may be pre-seasoned, but this doesn’t mean it’s hard to clean. Simply use warm water with a tiny amount of soap if needed. If you’re struggling with any stubborn food, leave the cookware under warm water for a few minutes, then scrub off the residue.
Step two: Dry your Lodge cast iron cookware as soon as possible with a lint-free cloth. Ignore any black residue on your cloth/towel as this is likely just seasoning, which is normal.
Step three: Once dry, rub a very light layer of cooking oil (vegetable oil, for example) over the surface of your Lodge cast iron cookware. Ensure there is no oil residue by rubbing a paper towel gently over the surface of your cookware. This process of re-seasoning helps the cookware maintain its natural non-stick surface and last for a lifetime.
The Lodge Cast Iron story
In 1896, Joseph Lodge, founder of Lodge Cast Iron, began making cast iron objects, including cast iron cookware from his foundry called Blacklock in Pittsburgh, USA.
Blacklock was successful in its production endeavours until, in 1910, a catastrophic fire broke-out, leaving the foundry in ruin. But, inspired by the success of Blacklock, Joseph and his family relaunched the business down the road just three months later as Lodge Cast Iron.
Lodge’s cast iron cookware is made using a classic technique called sand moulding. The process involves pouring a proprietary mix of molten pig iron, steel and other ingredients into a sand mould which holds its shape due to sand’s very high melting point. Once the mixture inside has cooled, the sand mould is broken to reveal a perfectly formed piece of cast iron cookware.
Lodge is dedicated to its eco-responsibility, constantly identifying and applying green initiatives to its manufacturing. As the years have gone by, Lodge has developed recycling programs, invested in pollution-reducing foundry equipment, and minimised its consumption of electricity.
